Badminton

Head Coach Diane Schroeder joined the UHS faculty in the School's first year after receiving her Master's Degree in Physical Education from UC Berkeley. In addition to being the Director of Physical Education, Diane has coached the UHS Gymnastics, Field Hockey, and Softball teams in past years. She currently heads up the Varsity Badminton program where her team's 24-year record is an impressive 160 wins and just 29 losses, and last year's team captured the Bay Counties League title.. 


Victor Leung's high school badminton coaching experience dates back to 1994. While coaching at Castro Valley High School, Victor guided his teams to five HAAL Championships with three undefeated seasons. Prior to joining the UHS program as Diane's co-head coach, Victor completed a two-year badminton training camp at the Hong Kong Sports Institute. While in Asia, he won 10 Council men's doubles titles in Hong Kong, three Indonesian club titles in Jakarta, and two Malaysian club titles in Kuala Lumpur.

Baseball

Greg Revelli returns for his 12th year of coaching baseball at UHS. He served as Assistant Coach at UHS for 8 years as the team won 4 BCL championships and made 6 NCS appearances. He spent 1 year at Marin Academy as head coach leading the team to an undefeated regular season and the school's first ever NCS appearance. Greg returned to UHS two years ago as the head coach and has led the team to one BCL title.

Greg is assisted by long time UHS coach, Colin Jones. Colin coached the baseball team and then the varsity basketball team at UHS for more than a decade. He and Greg were a baseball coaching tandem for 8 years with Colin as the head coach---now they have reengaged as coaching partners, just in reverse roles.

Boys' Basketball

Randy Bessolo returns for his third year as the Boys Varsity Head Coach. In his first two campaigns, he led the Red Devils to 18-11 and 21-8 records and two NCS bids. Randy takes pride in coaching skill development and an up-tempo, aggressive style of basketball. His coaching back-ground includes 5 years with the Illinois Warriors Basketball Club in Chicago, mostly working with 14 to 16 year olds. To date 25 of Randy’s former Chicago players have earned Division I college scholarships to schools including: Duke, North Carolina, Louisville, Illinois, DePaul, Northwestern, U.A.B and Gonzaga.

Randy has teamed up with JV Head Coach Evan Jones to help run the Bay Area Warriors Basketball Club based in San Francisco. In the last two years 19 players from the Club went on to play basketball in college including 6 at the Division I level.

An All CIF-Southern Section player at the Thacher School in Ojai, CA, Randy led his team to the section Final Four as a senior, while serving as team captain of both the basketball and baseball teams. He continued his basketball career at Columbia University in the Ivy League. After his career was cut short by injury his junior year, Randy stayed active in the program serving as a volunteer assistant coach.

Randy has over 20 years experience working with urban youth as part of several organizations including the Catholic Big Brother, Cabrini-Green Tutoring and Mercy Boys Home Hoops for Homework programs.

Randy’s educational background includes degrees from The Thacher School, Columbia University and Harvard Business School.

Matt Harris enters his first year as UHS Boys' Varsity Assistant Basketball Coach. Matt has recent college basketball coaching experience at Pacific Union College in St. Helena, CA and Napa Valley College in Napa, CA. Matt is a graduate of the University of Arizona with a degree in Exercise Physiology. While at UofA he was a Student Manager for Mike Candrea of the Women's Softball program and was part of 2 National Championship teams. He is also currently the Director of Business Development for CleanOffer.com.

Evan Jones is well known to UHS as he returns to coach the boys’ JV team for a 4th season. Evan, a UHS grad who starred in both basketball and baseball, has molded the JV program into a model of competitive success and full integration with the varsity philosophy and tactics.

Darro Jefferson brings his strong motivational leadership skills to the Big Red Freshman Boys Basketball program this season. Darro has demonstrated experienced coaching at the middle and high school level working with inner city youth and young adult basketball players.

Whether coaching in the Midnight Basketball League, San Francisco Bay Area Summer Pro-AM, or the Academic Athletic Association, Darro has helped young players fine tune their hoops skills and mature socially by offering them innovative Life Skills harm reduction classes designed to promote self-esteem and personal development. He has been instrumental helping communities invest in family oriented community based sports programs, leagues and teams.

He has a background in Broadcast Journalism, worked as a professional radio sports announcer, news reporter and morning disc jockey. For years he was the voice of Sports Phones USA, a national sports wire service providing subscribers with up-to-the-minute scores of NFL, MLB, NBA, and college basketball games in progress. Darro is a sought after motivational speaker/trainer who specializes in diversity training to broker partnerships with private business and non-profits.

Girls ' Basketball

Marvin Lui returns to University for his third year as the Girls Varsity Head Coach following five years of high school coaching at Dos Pueblos High School near Santa Barbara. A 2004 UCSB graduate (where he was team manager for the men’s hoop squad), Marvin has also coached at USCB and Cal basketball camps. A native of the East Bay, Marvin is currently a teacher in the San Mateo school system.

During his second season, Marvin led the team to a league title. The team then advanced to the final four in the NorCal tournament.

Marvin will be assisted by Pete Ippel. Pete played basketball in high school in Illinois and for a year at Cornell. Pete captained the track team at Cornell and has high jumped 7 feet! He is currently the resident manager of the San Francisco Ballet with responsibility for about 20 teenage dancers who all live just a few blocks from UHS.

The girls’ JV team this year will be coached by Athletic Director Jim Ketcham. Jim also coached the team in 2004. Jim has coached youth teams for many years and played high school basketball in Ohio where he was named to the Northwest Ohio All-Star team.

Cross-Country, Track and Field

Now in his thirteenth year with the UHS Cross Country and Track and Field program, head coach Jim Tracy has helped build a running dynasty. Coach Tracy was recognized as girls' cross country coach of the year in 2004 by the California Coaches Association.

In his first 11 years of coaching here, UHS Cross Country teams have combined for twenty-one Bay Counties League or Conference titles and seventeen North Coast Section titles (ten for the girls and seven for the boys). In 2004 both teams captured NCS titles. The girls' team has won the state title 3 of the past 4 years and the boys' team set a record for best overall performance at the NCS championships last year.

The six state titles are unmatched by any girls' cross country program (any division) in California.

Jim is assisted this fall by Hallie McClave (1st year), Bill Cirocco (Asst. Track & Field Coach), Kevin Cruikshank (3rd year), and Richard Mull (3rd year).

Kevin Cruikshank has a depth of cross country and track coaching experience. In the 1980's Kevin was the Asst. Track Coach at McAteer High School, as well as the Graduate Asst. Track and Cross Country Coach at SF State University. In the 1990's Kevin was the Assistant Coach of San Francisco's Impala Women's Running Club. Kevin was Head Women's Cross Country and Track Coach as well as Campus Fitness and Wellness Coordinator at Longview Community College in Lee's Summit, Missouri from 1998-2001. Before coaching at UHS, Kevin was the Assistant Track Coach at Lowell High School (2003-2006).

Jim Tracy also coaches the Track and Field team at University. He is assisted there by Bill Cirocco.

Having been an All-City Track Champion in the 100 and 220 sprints, Bill Cirocco brings his enthusiasm for high school track to University High School. He has also acted as head coach and president of the San Francisco Cheetahs, a USA Track and Field Federation team, for six years.

Stella Beale, Assistant Coach, began her running ‘career’ on the Grimsley High School Cross Country team in Greensboro, North Carolina. And, with only a few short pauses, she have been running fairly consistently, though not competitively, every since. Her sporting history also includes time as a varsity swimmer in high school, a member of the master’s swim team in Ann Arbor, Michigan, participation on the winter and spring track teams, a stint on the UNC-Chapel Hill crew team for two seasons in college, and participation in several sprint triathlons. At Greenhills, she also served as the Head Middle School Cross Country and Track coach.

Josh Babiak, Assistant to the Cross Country Teams, grew up in Corte Madera. He attended San Francisco State University and ran for the Cross Country teams in 2005 and 2006. He is currently earning he undergraduate degree in Psychology. Josh also works at MetroSport, a running store in the Marina District.

Fencing

UHS began offering fencing as an interscholastic sport for the first time in 2004. This team is led by Peter Burchard, a tremendous fencer in his own right and a master teacher who operates a leading fencing academy in San Francisco. Peter returns for his 3rd year with the team as it joins the San Francisco Section with eligibility to compete for the AAA league title.

Field Hockey

Stacey Schweighart enters her second year as Head Coach of the Varsity Girls Field Hockey team. Stacey attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and served as co-captain of the field hockey team her senior year. In her four years playing field hockey at UNC, Stacey and her team won three National Championship titles. Following UNC, Stacey lived in Australia for six months before attending Pepperdine University in Malibu to obtain her Master's in Clinical Psychology. In addition to coaching, Stacey works in Medical Sales and resides in San Francisco.

Mary Beth Noel is in her first year as the Assistant Varsity Coach at University High School. MB first played field hockey at the Agnes Irwin School in Bryn Mawr, PA. Upon graduating in 1995, she played field hockey and lacrosse at The College of William & Mary in Virginia. She captained the team her senior year. MB is an active member of the Northern California Field Hockey Association where she plays in the fall. She also serves as the Head Coach for the girls' lacrosse team in the spring, and is on staff in the Athletic Department at UHS.

Laura Oswald enters her first year as the Junior Varsity Field Hockey Coach. Laura played field hockey at Stevenson High School and then at Wheaton College in Massachusetts. At Wheaton, Laura was a co-captain for her team for two years. At Wheaton she earned Academic All- American two years as well as All New England. Since graduating in 2005 she has worked for several nonprofits in Tanzania and Argentina and is looking forward to settling in San Francisco.

Golf

Dave Gannon takes over the UHS golf program after serving as the team's technical coach for the past two seasons. A teaching professional at the Presidio Golf Club, Dave is a former college golfer who is looking forward to re-entering the world of interscholastic athletics where he personally had many great experiences.

Boys' Lacrosse

Matt Mesa becomes the 10th head coach at University as the program enters its 32nd year. Prior to his time at University, Matt held intern assistant coaching positions at Navy following graduation in 2003 where he stood out as a long-pole defenseman for the nationally ranked Midshipmen. His coaching philosophy focuses on aggressive, attacking play at both ends of the field, a commitment to team objectives first and the determination to outwork other schools both in preparation and during games. Matt is a native of Connecticut and currently works in equity sales in San Francisco.

Offense coordinator - Assistant Coach Nick Lockwood joins the UHS coaching staff as the Offensive Coordinator after coaching at Coronado High School in San Diego, CA for the last 2 years and prior to that at Norfolk Academy in Nofolk, Va. Nick graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2001 where he played midfield/attack for the Midshipmen. Prior to the Naval Academy, Lockwood played high school lacrosse at Calvert Hall College HS where he grew up in Baltimore, MD.

Defensive coordinator- Assistant Coach Braden Edwards returns for his 5th year with the Red Devils with his positive, forceful coaching style. Braden was captain of the Gettysburg College team where he also earned All-American honors as a defenseman.

Goalie Coach- Assistant Coach Jake Mckenna returns for his 3rd year as a volunteer coach where he works directly with the goalies. Jake captained his team at Harvard where he was 4 time All Ivy, 2 time All New England and a national All-American.

JV. Coach-Peter Middleton returns for his 2nd year with the JV. Peter played college lax at UCSD and SDSU at both the middie and attack positions.

JV. Coach-Bob Wannup enters his first year with University as co-coach of the JV team. A Vermont native, Bob played at Middlebury College as a defensive middie on their 2002 D-III National Championship team. Bob has previous coaching experience as an assistant with the Northeastern University Lacrosse Club team.

Girls' Lacrosse

Mary Beth Noel takes over the UHS girls' lacrosse program following her recent position as assistant coach for the UC-Berkeley girls' lax team. The personal recommendation of departing (for Boston) coach Catherine Batchelder, MB inherits a team that is the two-time defending MCAL champion and the North Coast Section runner-up in 2005.

MB captained the lacrosse and field hockey teams at William and Mary where she graduated with a degree in English. She also holds a Masters in Sports Management from USF.

MB is also extremely active in NorCal women's lacrosse circles serving as Treasurer of the Northern California Women's Lacrosse Association and as Director of NorCal Elite, a program focused on player development.

MB is assisted by Tomomi Sugawara who played lacrosse at the elite level in Japan and Elizabeth Renehan, an All-American from Middlebury College.

Soccer

Deejae Johnson enters his fourth year as head of the UHS soccer program serving as head coach of both the boys' and girls' varsity teams. Deejae holdsh a USSF B license, NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, English FA prelim badge and a Dutch KNVB diploma. This summer Deejae was a member of the Cal North Olympic Development staff working with the Boy's U19 team that placed four players in the National Pool.

Deejae was a four year starter at the University of Vermont leading the team in scoring his senior year while being named All-Region. Deejae's post-college playing career included stints with the San Francisco Bay Seals, the Cape Cod Crusaders, the New Hampshire Phantoms and the Vermont Voltage. He coached high school teams in Vermont and led his boys' team to the state title. Prior to joining UHS, Deejae was a member of the Cal coaching staff for both the men's and women's teams.

Deejae is a graduate of the University of Vermont and has a masters in Sports Psychology from the Kennedy School of Professional Psychology in Orinda. He is the director of SoccerInsight that runs school vacation skill development camps and programs.

Vip Gupta is in his first year as Assistant Coach of the Boys' Varsity Soccer team. Before coming to UHS Vip was head coach of the boys' soccer team at his previous school and took them to the league finals, semifinals and quarterfinals. His own soccer history starts with his role as a midfielder on the Varsity team at Naperville North High School in suburban Illinois. During college, in Chicago, he played for a club team which competed against teams nation wide and while studying abroad in Florence he played for an international club team. Transitioning over to outdoor sports he currently competes in mountain bike races. Vip is a full-time faculty member at UHS and is excited to work with UHS student/athletes on and off the field.

Walker Wright enters his second season as Assistant Coach of the Boys Varsity Soccer team. Walker is a 2000 graduate of Princeton where he played midfield for the soccer team and won the outright Ivy League title his senior year. After college, Walker played for Botafogo Futsal in Athens, Greece for two years while teaching English at Athens College where he also helped coach various soccer teams. Walker recently received a MSc degree from the London School of Economics where he played for the football club in the British Universities Sports Association.

Robin Ramirez, the JV Boy's Soccer Coach (Red Team), is a recent graduate of Fordham University. Robin began coaching basketball for two years before he started coaching soccer skills and technique for children and teenagers in 2004. Since then he has helped run many soccer skill clinics throughout New York City.

Daniele Volpi, the JV Boy's Soccer Coach (White Team), was born and raised in Denmark. His coaching experience traces back to Denmark where he coached boys between the age of 7 & 13 and girls between the ages of 12 & 16. Daniele currently plays with the San Francisco Celtics and also serves as the Executive Head Chef for Trader Vic's

Softball

Head coach, Donn Sanders, brings a wealth of youth softball coaching experience to the program that was restarted in 2004 and won a league title in 2005. Donn led the Marin Girls Softball League for five years as it expanded from 380 to over 1000 players. He has coached youth teams at all levels and is a long standing softball teacher through his popular hitting and pitching clinics. Donn, a fast-pitch softball pitcher himself, brings his love of the game and his talent for teaching to the UHS program.

Swimming

Jennifer Schoolfield takes over the Red Devils swim program following two years as Head Coach at Notre Dame Belmont High School. A talented high school and club swimmer growing up, Jen has a strong personal grasp of the unique nature of high school swimming---the values it can instill and the friendships that are created. Jen graduated from the University of North Carolina with a degree in Psychology in 1999 and also holds a Masters in Family and Marriage Therapy from USF. She works as the counselor at the Sterne School just down the street from UHS, a school for children with learning disabilities. An active swimmer, Jen can boast of multiple Alcatraz swim experiences.

Assistant Coach Matt Roberto is now in his tenth year working with UHS swimmers. He directs the aquatics program at the San Francisco Boys' and Girls' Club. Matt is well-known throughout the San Francisco swim community and has coached a number of great UHS teams and All-American swimmers during his long tenure here.

Girls' Tennis

Fall 2007 marks the start of John Yandell's twenty-seventh year as the UHS Girls' Varsity Tennis Coach, making his the longest tenure of any of our coaches. John has posted an amazing 261-89 (75%) record along with an equally amazing 172-42 league mark (80%).

Over the last decade he has become one of the nation's leading experts in the study and teaching of the professional game, through his work for Advanced Tennis Research, and also his new instructional website, Tennisplayer.net. He is the author of Visual Tennis: Mental Imagery and the Quest for the Winning Edge and the Visual Tennis video. His articles have also appeared in Tennis, World Tennis, and Inside Tennis magazines. The John Yandell Tennis School is located in San Francisco.

Lauren and Kelly Hickey are recent graduates of University of San Francisco. They earned Bachelors of Arts degrees in Exercise Sport and Science. They were raised in beautiful Santa Rosa, California. Lauren and Kelly played varsity college tennis for four years. The first two years were at Santa Rosa Junior College where they earned all American Honors in both singles and doubles. They completed their college careers at USF where they earned scholar athlete honors both years. They are currently working towards earning their Masters' of Science from San Francisco State University. Both girls are passionate about exercise &tennis. They plan on pursing careers in teaching and coaching.

Boys' Tennis

UHS Athletic Director Jim Ketcham takes over the boys’ tennis program. A two-time former Ohio State High School doubles champion, Jim played college tennis at Princeton (where he was also a member of the Tigers national championship squash team). While in college, Jim also served as a head club professional in Toledo, Ohio..

Jim is assisted by Minh Nguyen, a highly ranked player on the French circuit and math teacher at UHS and girls’ coach, John Yandell.

Volleyball

Steve Flores takes over our volleyball program this year. Steve grew up in the San Jose area and received his undergraduate degree at Berkeley. He then attended the University of Michigan, where he received his Masters in Public Policy. Steve has coached high school volleyball in Indiana for several years and also directed and coached the Indy Juniors Olympic Volleyball Club in Indianapolis for five years coaching teams at all levels. Steve, wife and child have just relocated to the Bay Area.

Sarah New, Assistant Varsity Coach, I was born and raised in Tulsa Oklahoma and recently moved to the Bay Area to pursue personal training and nursing. She has played both school and club volleyball since the age of 11. In 2002, her team Tulsa Volleyball Club earned the title of Junior Olympic National Champions in 17's club. Sarah also led her high school, Bishop Kelley, to two 6A State Championships, and was selected all tournament at State her senior year. Once she went to college at Oklahoma State University for a degree in Althetic Training, she started coaching club, school, and giving private lessons. This will be her first year coaching in at UHS!

Don Young returns for his second year as a volunteer assistant coach to Steve Flores, having been his teammate on and off for over 15 years in adult volleyball leagues. As a statistician in biotech and a former fencer at Cornell, he is trained to identify patterns and to exploit the tendencies of the opposition; he seeks to impart similar analytical skills among the volleyball players.

Jenny Kline, girls JV volleyball coach at UHS, was a member of her varsity volleyball, basketball and swim teams in high school. She was a coxwain on the women’s crew team at Georgetown University, and has been coaching swimming and crew for the past 11 years. As an Assistant and Head Coach of the Miss Porter’s School crew team from 1998-2002, Jenny coached boats to victory in the New England Championships and participated in both Nationals and the Henley Regatta. She also started the swim program at Miss Porter’s in 1998, and coached the varsity swim team at Sage Hill School in Orange County from 2003-2005.
