Month's Newsletter This year’s POCIS Adult Conference was held at the San Francisco State University Downtown Center on February 7, 2003. Over 100 teachers, administrators and parents from various schools across the Bay Area were in attendance. The topic for this workshop was “The Recruitment and Retention of Teachers of Color in Independent Schools.” In an effort to best facilitate this conference, POCIS brought in, Lalitha Shastri, a consultant on diversity and multicultural education in independent schools. Lalitha taught for six years in an independent school in the Southeast, where she also served as Diversity Coordinator and faculty representative on a Board subcommittee for diversity initiatives. Her areas of expertise are diversity dialogue, multicultural curriculum, and hiring and retention of faculty and staff of color. Conference participants explored paradigms and
strategies for hiring, supporting and retaining faculty and staff of
color in Bay Area independent
schools. In small- and large-group discussions, conference participants
also learned (1) how a school’s culture impacts hiring practices,
(2) paradigm shifts essential to hiring and retention and (3) practical
strategies for seeking, hiring, supporting and retaining faculty and
staff of color. Archive |
